What is a catch-all email domain?
A catch-all (or "accept-all") domain is configured to accept mail sent to any address at that domain, even ones that don't correspond to a real mailbox. Because the mail server never rejects the SMTP handshake, a standard verification check can't tell whether a specific address like jane@acme.com actually exists.
Why do most verification tools just mark catch-alls "unknown"?
Because resolving them requires more than an SMTP check - it takes pattern analysis (does "jane@acme.com" look like a real name-based address vs random characters?), domain reputation signals, and historical data. Most providers don't build this, so they punt and label the address "unknown" or "risky" and either don't charge for it or leave you to guess.
